State Legislative Issues Committee

The State Legislative Issues Committee (SLIC) is the advocacy arm of the JLSL, providing education and promotion of issues important to members of our League.

Our 2005-2006 JLSL platform is three-fold:

Domestic Violence:
The Junior League of St. Louis supports legislation that would:

  • Ensure protections against domestic violence;
  • Provide access to safe havens and services for families experiencing domestic violence;
  • Improve judicial and legal protections against domestic violence.

Foster and Adoptive Care:
The Junior League of St. Louis supports legislation that would:

  • Provide proper and consistent support, such as adoption subsidies, to assist and facilitate the adoption of children within the foster care system;
  • Ensure quality care and service for children within the foster care system.

Women's Health:**
The Junior League of St. Louis supports health care legislation that would:

  • Ensure access to affordable, quality health care for Missouri, with a particular focus on women;
  • Improve access to breast and cervical cancer screenings and treatment for all at-risk women, regardless of age;
  • Increase access to coordinated prenatal care including access to mental health, substance abuse programs, and smoking reduction programs as well as domestic violence prevention. **Of note, while the Junior League of St. Louis does not take a specific position on Medicaid expenditures or reproductive rights, individual members are encouraged to investigate these issues and call their legislators with their personal point of view.
